Jetstar "white knuckle" orbit during MEL storm

The journo, other than having poor grammar skills, doesn't say why this flight
was a "white knuckle" experience.

Was the aircraft IN the storm and trying to find a way to land, or was it merely
orbiting outside of Melbourne waiting for a break to commence its approach?

You know what IS a white knuckle experience? Approaching JFK and you're in cloud
or fog all the way in from 30,000ft til touchdown, and it's bumpy all the way
in...

That article is typical for AAP. Very marginal journalistic standards.

Where? I can't see it.

It's possible that some passengers had the impression that they would
only live to tell the tale if the weather let up long enough to allow a
landing, and that they didn't realise that diversion was always an
option. What might seem obvious to the crew, and some of the passengers,
would not necessarily be obvious to all.

Not that that would make it a white knuckle ride.

Jetstar passengers complain of mystery illness after smelling fumes in
Airbus A320's cabin

SEVERAL passengers and crew became sick after being overcome by a
mystery smell while onboard a Jetstar flight from Brisbane to Mackay
this morning.

 A Jetstar spokesman said about six passengers and several crew
reported feeling sick just before the plane was due to land in Mackay
about 9am.

A doctor on board attempted to calm the ill while the pilot radioed
ahead for the fire brigade and ambulance officers to meet the A320
Airbus on landing.

The spokesman said the sick were treated at the airport and none
required hospital treatment.

They had been complaining of dizziness but he denied any passengers were
unconscious as a result of the mystery fumes.

There were 128 passengers onboard at the time.

The cause of the smell is still unknown.

The spokesman said engineers and airport staff checked over the plane
but could not locate a problem. The plane was expected to be cleared for
further use this afternoon.

I couldn't work out what was supposed to be white knuckled about it either.

JFK is easy, though the Canarsie is a bit odd. Just take lots and lots of
gas, 'cos your flight plan and the actual route you fly are unlikely to
have much of a relationship.

When I last flew into JFK, it was foggy/cloudy all the way in. Most of the pax
breathed somewhat audible sighs of relief as we touched down as well as a few of
them cheering or clapping.

While I wasn't worried, per se, I hoped that the ILS wasn't down to the
standards of that installed in Australian airports.

What is a tad disconcerting is the initial roll and it seems to be going on, and
on, and on, and on. As I cannot see what's ahead of me it's a bit of a worry if
you think that the runway end mustn't be far ahead. Then Vr occurs and you're
away.

It was like that in Chicago, once. DC-10 taking off, and seemingly taking its
time about it. The UA incident of a couple of years before when it lost an
engine was still fresh in people's mind. Luckily I had some hops-based relaxant
before the flight...

And the idea of having a tail cam or even a nose cam that can be viewed from
your seat would be great. But if the dickheads who control air safety and
security decided that such gadgets were 'inappropriate', then a pox on them, I
say.

No too sure that a tail cam that is showing only fog would be all that
reassuring. In low vis ops you wouldn't see anything....
