After lots of hunting I think I've settled on the plane I want to
build. The criteria going in are as follows:

1) FAR 103 Legal

2) Home build plans available

3) Relatively short take off and landing

4) Want the weight in airframe/wings/engine/gear not fancy fuselage so it
looks like a Sopwith Pup or a Cub.

5) Steel or aluminum construction (have more experience/skill with metal
then with wood or composite).

Tail-dragger and tractor engine a plus.

Basically I'm not looking for anything fancy, just a relatively safe,
decent performing ultralight I can build for a relatively little amount
of time and money.

The Flitplane seems to fit my requirements and budget quite well. I have
spoken with Mark Klotz who seems nice enough but I have not found much
info on it outside of <www.wingsoffreedomaviation.com> . Anyone have any
info or advice to share.

Thanks in advance for your help,

If you truly want a 103 legal ultralight light. Really there is very few
options that meet those requirements anymore.
I think that if you put anything but the 28hp and bare bones everything you
will not be under 254lbs with the flitplane.
You may want to concider the B1RD.

Thanks for the reply. Not a bad plane. I would like to build it
however and it doesn't look like this plane is being produced anymore (or
for quite a while).
The Flitplane looks pretty bare bones to begin with. I don't know
what I would want to add except a few gages. A little more power would be
nice. I like Hirth engines, would be nice if they had something in
between the 28 and 40 hp engines. Would like to talk to someone who has
built/flown one.

I built one a few years ago and have it flying.  ULWA is right on, 254lbs is
very difficult to achieve with more than a 277.  I have a 440 Kawaski on mine
and, well, its close!  Photos can be found at
