Crossing an NDB 3 times on an approach?30 Nov 2006 14:49 GMT22
Would it make sense to cross an NDB 3 times in the completion of an
approach?
I'm thinking where there is a hold in lieu of a PT, you may cross the
NDB, complete a parallel hold entry, cross the NDB a second time, then

Real Life (in IMC) IFR training29 Nov 2006 14:03 GMT36
I am looking for a flight training school , which provides  IFR
training in actaul IMC condition on a series of cross country flight .
I am a IFR rated private pilot with about 8 -10 hours of real IMC
flying and I would like to build my confidence by flying with  a
backup for vacuum pump/attitude indicator failure29 Nov 2006 06:58 GMT26
I would be interested in getting opinions about backup systems for a
vacuum pump failure and/or AI failure.  I have a 172P with a single
vacuum pump system, standard instruments otherwise, and a Garmin 430.
I am most concerned about having a good backup if I lose a vacuum pump
Weight of Ice29 Nov 2006 04:19 GMT13
I roughly calculated that the weight of 1 in. of ice on all forward
surfaces on my T182 (fixed gear) is about 250 lbs.  Anyone cares to
comment on this?

Caution Wake Turbulence29 Nov 2006 04:14 GMT7
Here you are tootling along on your IFR flight plan - maybe on
vectors - whatever, you're
exactly where you should be, following ATC's instructions to the
letter, and they then say
Govt Plates27 Nov 2006 07:12 GMT103
I see the latest batch of government approach plates are printed on
nice white paper, rather like the stuff Jepp uses. Much better! The
nasty old paper they used to use was very hard to read in low light
conditions as the contrast was rather lacking. They are always one step

Garmin 496 Training18 Nov 2006 15:06 GMT40
I was thinking of upgrading my 396 to the 496 and bought VFlite's
Interactive Guide to see the new features in action.  It was very helpful,
but I just don't think there are enough new features (taxi guidance, AOPA
database, etc.) to justify the price tag.
Can there be false lobes on a *localizer*?17 Nov 2006 22:27 GMT14
I recall reading about false lobes on the glideslope, and have seen it
firsthand doing practice approaches in VMC.  I thought it was due to antenna
sidelobes, and thus the localizer might be subject to a similar phenomenon.  I have
yet to see anyone reference this, so is there a ...
