Chicago area from the southwest - advice?31 Dec 2006 20:17 GMT38
We're visiting friends who live in downtown Chicago next weekend and
I'm considering a few airports for our visit.  Aside from lamenting
about the murder of Meigs (which would have been perfect, of course) or
suggesting a boycott, can anyone offer suggestions as to the best field

I'm looking to get my Commercial certificate once I finish my
Instrument rating and am trying to meet as much as the requirements as
possible.  I noticed it says in 61.129:

IFR Cancellation Question29 Dec 2006 03:08 GMT170
Severe clear today, so other then the safety net of ATC services, weather
wasn't an issue.
Coming back from HBG (Hattiesburg MS) to MBO (Madison MS) encountered the
following exchange with ATC.  I was already told to expect the visual
SE airplanes in clouds - near freezing level27 Dec 2006 22:04 GMT31
Those of you, who frequently fly SE airplanes without deicing
equipment, without turbo or second engine but use their IR Ticket to
poke around in water loaded clouds at or near freezing level:
What are your strategies to cope with the weather ?

Yesterday, we had filed /G (with a CNX-80).  Our clearance was KPOU IGN
V157 HAARP -D-> KHPN.  Nothing out of the ordinary there.
HPN was using the ILS-16 (http://204.108.4.16/d-tpp/0612/00651I16.PDF)  We
were on V157 somewhere north of VALRE when we got "fly heading 200 to
RNAV vectors26 Dec 2006 22:31 GMT74
Anybody ever get vectors to final for RNAV approaches?
Around here (Mobile. AL), I never hear it, although there are plenty of
ARNAVs with lower minimums than the VOR approaches at both airports.  If you
ask ATC for one of the ARNAVs, they'll clear you to an IAF every time.

Contact Approach -- WX reporting22 Dec 2006 13:43 GMT64
It was briefly mentioned in one of the longer threads that a contact
approach requires 1 sm reported ground visibility.  It reminded me that
I had flown a contact approach some 8 months ago to an airport about 15
minutes after the tower had closed (there is no automated weather
Commercial 250nm VFR flight - all 3 landings on the same day?20 Dec 2006 12:11 GMT46
I cannot find an answer on the FAA Q&A site (the one with the personal
login, but which in fact appears to be rather bare), so I wrote to
them. However they often don't reply with anything meaningful, so I
would appreciate any references anybody here can dig out.
Looking for a math wiz!19 Dec 2006 23:40 GMT22
Okay, I know I've seen a lot of engineers and technical folks on here.
I have a complex math problem relating to the classic wind triangle
that I posted on sci.math and received little response.  I don't know
if they're stumped or just not interested. :-)

features, having been used to make $1 accelerometers, is now being

Any W&B calculators that work in 640x480 on HP4700 PDA?16 Dec 2006 11:23 GMT43

Instrument Rating Foreign Pilot16 Dec 2006 04:55 GMT10
I need to get my FAA license upgraded.  Currently it is ME, VFR, based
on my Canadian ME IFR ATPL.  To have it include IFR, I have to write
the FAA Knowledge Test "Instrument Rating - Foreign Pilot (IFP)".  I
cannot find/google what exactly is being tested for the IFP:  Is it
