What does the N in N1 stand for? As the questin states... I know that N1 N2 or N3 is the otor speed in the percentage of the maximum rated shaft speed. But why the letter N. Why not B or Q or what ever

Looks like I'm picking up a left handed student. He's several hours into his private and rather frustrated with his need to take his hand off the stick to write something down. Since we are at a Class B airport, he needs to do this fairly regularly.

This is a question concerning IFR in Europe. According to JAR FCL 1.190, an applicant to an IR(A) shall "...hold a PPL(A) including a night qualification or CPL(A) and shall have completed at least 50 hours cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command....."
