contest corner -- start anywhere31 Jan 2008 21:39 GMT11
I wrote a new "contest corner" for publication in the March Soaring
magazine. It explains the new rule by which you get credit for
distance from the point where you exit the start cylinder in US
contests. Rules geeks who just can't wait can read it on my website,

could find it? Thanks a lot for your help in advance,
Transponder Antenna30 Jan 2008 18:03 GMT6
I'm seriously considering installing a transponder
in our Discus CS.  Does anyone have any experience
with the dipole antenna model L2 made by Advanced Aircraft
Electronics (AAE) and sold on the Wings & Wheels web
Slightly OT: paragliding in NZ30 Jan 2008 02:24 GMT6
It seems that a German powered paraglider pilot has just flown one over
Aoraki/Mt. Cook as his first shot at mountain flying. He flew from the
West Coast, east to the Mt. Cook landing strip in a westerly, passing
directly over the top of Aoraki, which is roughly N-S with not more ...

For USA:  Data Plate Exemption?29 Jan 2008 15:39 GMT7
Can someone tell me the status of the old Data Plate Exemption for
gliders?  There used to be a page on the SSA web page with the
exemption, but I can't find it now.
Is the Data Plate Exemption exempt?  Do I now need a data plate?

Gottingen 549 Airfoil Experimental Data?29 Jan 2008 03:36 GMT9
The Gottingen 549 Airfoil is used on many sailplanes, including my
Cherokee II.  For my aerodynamics class, I am developing a FORTRAN
program to use the panel method to determine aerodynamic coefficients
for an airfoil.  Part of the exercise is to first pick an airfoil with
Quieting a Pawnee28 Jan 2008 20:47 GMT6
My club is about to acquire a 250 HP Pawnee with no muffler and a 7 ft
climb pitch prop.  We are anticipating some noise issues.  I have seen
Pawnees in the UK with mufflers  and four bladed (Hoffmann?) props and
which were eerily quiet.

l'Hotellier on EB2827 Jan 2008 11:32 GMT5
The first edition of the new magazine, "Gliding International" has an
article on the 2 seat self-launch super glider, the EB28.  I would
have thought that a glider of this class would have automatic hookups,
but it uses l'Hotellier connections.
