A simple question (hopefully) from a PPL. Do Commercial pilots flying heavies fly predetermined routes whilst in TMA's or CTA's and how well do they keep to those routes when arriving at an airport? I see there are STAR's defined but am I going to get regularly overflown if I live ...

The otherday I was casually flying along at FL340 or something, trailing a long contrail and flying above a layer. I looked out of the window and saw two things...(1) the shadow of my contrail, and (2) a bright spot which indicted where I was.
