Gliders over the Lake District.31 May 2005 11:29 GMT2
Out on the fells yesterday I saw, very unusually at least 4 sailplanes arrive
over Crummock Water (NW corner of Lake District) from the SE and depart
Southwards. Very curious as to their origen (used to glide at London Gliding
Club in early 50's) presumably it was a turning point in ...
Flightpath Maps - UK & Ireland31 May 2005 01:43 GMT1
Hi, 2-4 planes fly over our village daily. We are 40 miles from Dublin
Airport. We would like to know where these planes are going. Is there anyway
of identifying these flights or are there flightpath maps available?
Does an altimeter read "exact" in a standard atmosphere?30 May 2005 16:01 GMT11
I know there is a correction if the OAT departs from the standard.
What I would like to know is whether there is any further required
correction to get a "right" reading.
For flight, this is academic because separation is still maintained,
Meteor & F1528 May 2005 18:28 GMT2
We've had a Meteor and an F15 buzzing over here for the past hour at low
level.
Anyone know what they are practising for...any flypasts due down here? I
am on the E Sussex coast between Brighton and Newhaven
Sywell - NSF no more - what next?27 May 2005 16:57 GMT6
I've not seen a post on here regarding the change of location for the NSF so
forgive me if this is a repeat!
As you may know NSF had been at Sywell since the beginning of time - pretty
much.... Well its gone now, I have only heard rumours as to why - anyone
GPS27 May 2005 12:06 GMT25
I fly a fair bit of IFR in an a/c with standard VORs/DME/ADF and I'm
thinking of buying a GPS as a backup to these, not for primary nav.  Any
suggestions, I've looked at the Garmin 196 which seems a decent all rounder,
anybody got any other thoughts or suggestions.

Mustang droptanks23 May 2005 18:44 GMT11
It was the ability to carry these that enabled Mustangs to operate over
Berlin towards the end of WW2.
Why couldn't Spitfires have carried these ?
Same engine, what was different ?
Sywell (Northampton)23 May 2005 13:04 GMT54
Last week, I did my first land away.
We flew into Sywell at Northampton. It's a little grass air strip.
(It has two grass runways that cross each other)
What a fantastic little airfield.
glide scope22 May 2005 20:15 GMT2
Yesterday, I did a theory run through / update with my instructor on
loss of power emergency landings.
My instructor said that  a PA28 Warrior trimmed at 75mph would give a
glide scope of around 500ft per minute. It was surprising that 3,000ft

Where to go?20 May 2005 16:25 GMT12
I'm a PPL holder with only 8 hours since qualifying for my licence.  The
time has now come to take my wife up for a spin (not literally!!), but I'd
appreciate some opinions as to where to go.  The plan is to fly from
Gloucestershire (Staverton) in the morning, have a decent lunch ...
Transponder question15 May 2005 09:02 GMT3
Just noticed on the info for Le Bourget, it says to transit CTR 2 you need
transponder with modes A & C but to enter CTR 3 you need Mode A with
encoding altimeter.  Anyone know what the difference is between modes A&C
and just mode A with encoding altimeter?
Where can I buy 'Renters Insurance'?14 May 2005 17:46 GMT1
I hire C152s from my local flying club. The aircraft have full 'hull'
insurance and £1000000 3rd party liability insurance.
...But I understand that in the event of an accident I may still be
sued by the insurance company since the insurance protects the club,
